A Girl Who Sees

Really see things differently. She doesn’t accept whatever comes to her the way it comes. She doesn’t find many who thinks alike, yet she finds the courage to voice her opinion at the age of seven.

A new day comes. The girl sees her mother fasting. She asks her mother.

Girl: “Maa, why are you fasting?”

Mother: “I am fasting for your father. If I do this fast he will live a long and happy life.”

Girl: “Wow! Now you are fasting for father. When is the day when he will be fasting for you.”

Mother: “My sweet dear girl, there is no day like that. Men don’t do fasts for women. It’s our duty, not their’s.”

Mother smiles sweetly and gets busy preparing for the rest of the day thinking her girls understands the concept of culture and marriage well. As a mother, she is satisfied that she is setting good examples for her daughter.

But suddenly the girl appears from nowhere and says again.

Girl: “Maa I thought a lot about what you said earlier and I think there are a few things that need to be discussed.”

Mother is curious to see her daughter behaving in such a mature manner.

Mother: “What are those things?”

Girl: “Our teacher told us that to stay healthy we need to eat properly. That means fasting can affect your health badly.  And how do you know that your fasting is working?”

Mother is thinking. How to respond to her questions and what should she say. Finally, the mother speaks.

Mother: “Dear, your teacher is right that to stay healthy we need to eat properly but that’s for kids. They should never go hungry. But adults can stay hungry sometimes. It doesn’t affect their health badly. And I know, me fasting for your father works because I have faith that what I am doing is right.

Girl: “But I don’t have faith. I mean no one’s age can increase just because someone else is going hungry fro it for a day. It doesn’t sound logical.”

The girl stays quiet for some time and announces again.

Girl: “I would never keep fast for anyone unless I see proof of their age increasing by me doing it”

Mother gets angry and scolds her. A mother always has the best interest of her child at heart and she knows if her daughter challenges things million years old, her life will be tough.

Mother: You shall do as you are told. No more questions. Now go and play. Once your father I smack from work we all shall have dinner.”

Mother gets busy with her work again and the girl leaves to go to her room. She knows that she is strong and right enough to do exactly as she decided today. No-one can change that.

The girl is 30 years old now and married for the past eight years. She is keeping the same fast for the last eight years for her husband. She knows somewhere deep in her heart that it is not right yet life is more peaceful this way and who doesn’t love peace.

Working Hard Was Never The Lesson….

In our ancient time, people had a very clear routine and the outcomes of their activities were very definite and predictable. Nowadays it is not the case.

Long long time ago we had ancestors who knew very little about anything but hunting. Our ancestors were great hunters. They would get up in the morning, divide themselves into groups and go out hunting. Giving up was not an option as everyone’s life depended upon the food they gathered by killing gigantic and dangerous animals. So, they had only one mantra. Keep trying until enough food is gathered. After getting what they were supposed to get, they would return home…enjoy their meal with their families and won’t be worrying about the future as they knew that their future was in their hands and didn’t depend on the sad story of someone else’s life who suddenly decided to take revenge of all the bad things happened in one’s life done by people who may be long dead. Our ancestors, given, that they tried fair, they could keep everyone in their families well fed.

And then we evolved.

We stopped hunting animals and started hunting careers. The only difference is that career hunting is a lot more difficult than animal hunting. Hunting animals was a job of skills, practices, teamwork, focus and most importantly timing. More refined your skills were, the more you practiced and gained experience, your job would become easy and there will fewer chances for you to get killed during the hunt. One had to work as per the plan with one’s teammate without losing concentration and result would be juicy meet with lots of protein for many days and if the prey was a mammoth that may be many weeks. No offense for all the animal lovers here.

But, nowadays, even if you take care of all and every above-mentioned point (can’t ignore that there were so many of them even then) in your work life, there is no guarantee that your life would be stress-free or peaceful. Few days of less energy or less zeal or something else you never knew could be possible in professional life atmosphere(such as your senior telling you in your evaluation that your walk is so lethargic and you don’t look energetic enough to take on the world, whatever..) and you would be facing the wrath of the guardians of the most sacred religion of modern time which all companies follow today and we know it as giving your two hundred percent to your work and never say no if you want to survive.

You would be forced to acknowledge that it’s not you who deserve this opportunity but it is your seniors’ great hearts that they have chosen you for such a great world-altering once in a lifetime event. Either you start giving your two hundred percent again or you shall be on all the job-hunting sites for the next few whole nights looking for an even shittier job.

Like few very intelligent people say, if you want to move on, you need to stop wandering into your past. Same wisdom would be applicable here by people who don’t even follow any spiritual leader. No appreciation or gratitude for past work and achievements would be shown. Your boss would make it his or her personal yoga for stress release to beat you into the best employee of the company(being responsible for you…not to forget personally). In other words, he or she would be after you all the times, even in your dreams, coaxing you to do better. Of course, our seniors want best for us. We are just not supposed to whine(although one can die to try) and if you feel like a dead person after all this life-changing learning process, you should realize how lucky you are to get opportunities people can’t even dream about most of the time(trust me its a lie they tell to everyone while they assign the same kind of work to all). You learned from the experience and use these lessons further in after-death or in next life by making some of your junior’s life hell in a way you feel fit.

Giving you examples of some spineless creature who continuously licks boots of every senior for the sake of staying at the so-called safe side of the thing, wherever it may be, is the next best thing you would hear every day. How lucky we are to have such a healthy competition. Endless working hours without any breaks, giving your hundred percent, undivided attention, no personal life and still always cheery. Still not enough to keep you well fed even for the next few days if you are slowing down a bit because your girlfriend just cheated on you with your best friend(come on, its life…these things happen). You will out on the streets with no work in no time.

Hold your breath as the best out of it yet to come. They shall convince you in very few words that you don’t deserve the benefits of such a great opportunity. You are not good enough. You will believe them as many things were expected from you and you were not responsible enough(worthless).

So..the whole funda of this cynical tirade is basically, we are not built to work like this. Meaning we enjoy our free time as much as our work time. So when we work like a machine for a long time something inside us breaks and our ancestors come back to life. We want to live like them again and work only as much as it is necessary to fulfill our daily needs only for the next few days and not for the next many years to come. Our ancient genes start telling us that you don’t need to work anymore as you have already gathered enough food to keep the family well fed for the next few days.

But our modern work culture says otherwise. Don’t stop working ever. Keep learning(even when God himself tells that there is nothing remaining to learn), keep pounding at every task (even if you are not a monkey in a circus), always look forward for extra responsibility(as if you are the father of the house full of two dozen kids) and last but not the least, keep the seniors always entertained(as if you are a snake charmer). Learn all the above-mentioned tricks and you will be on the top of your game(if it’s there somewhere).

Some of us, no doubt has adapted well to the new work culture but few of us are still in struggling phase. These people stop working the moment they realize that they have done enough for the day and they don’t even do it intentionally. They are just not into it.

The rules of hunting have been changed but we haven’t evolved completely yet as per the changed rules. Few things of post-evolution are yet to be learned by many of us because for few of us working hard was never the lesson.

Its Called Brain Train

First of all I want to clarify that I am not talking about women empowerment. God only knows that there are more then enough people already talking about it…Below I am mentioning an old or should I say an ancient Indian saying..

        “Dhor, Ganwar, Shoodra, Pashu, Nari
Sakal Tadan Ke Adhikari”

Meaning…Foolish, Barbarian, Scheduled caste, Animals and Women (First Line), these all deserve to be tortured (second Line). Now now, don’t get alarmed, as its not something thats happening right now as far as I can see. People became very progressive long back and are trying to treat everyone and everything in a much better way compared to older times.

I can even prove it. When I was young my father used to repeat this saying in a funny way. He would say,”Once a man told this saying to a woman but the woman was very smart. She said in return that I am Nari here and the rest four are you. So who deserve more thrashing?” Then my father added, “slowly men stopped saying this as it was evidently clear that they were in more danger than all the other the four mentioned in the saying. We both laughed a lot on this.

But still, there are few things which we absorb our entire life mostly, from our society without even knowing that we are actually doing so. I call it ‘Brain Train’. Small and big things continuously happen around us. In our family, in our neighbourhood and in our work place. People say and do many things everyday. Although we feel that we are a unique person and there is no one like us, still we follow.

I don’t know why I want to mention it here but once I was talking to one of my old relative. She got married at a very young age of 17. Without any knowledge of basically anything (as there was no internet back then). Her husband, although loved her very much but still there were times when he showed her how bad he can be. My old relative belonged to a not so well to do family and her husband made her feel really bad about this many times. She was only sister of 8 brothers and they all were very fond of her and she was of them. Whenever she had to listen to something bad about her family, her sorrow was heart breaking.

Point is, he knew about her family before marriage. Then why did he hurt her so badly for something which he accepted in the beginning of their relationship. My guess is, because of ‘Brain Train’. Both men and women in society are deeply train to hold an imaginary place in their households and in their society also. Men  (mostly) are self declared supreme boss of the house, doesn’t matter what actual power or eligibility they hold to get that kind of position and women are their followers. If a women try to defy men in any way, she would be shown her place right away. And the worst part is that she will accept it happily as she had been trained to do so her entire life.

Few days back I was listening to the radio. A very young working girl, speaking fluently in many languages on a public platform, was asking a love mentor to provide her with a solution of her problem. The problem was like this – she promised her In-Laws before marriage that she will give up non-veg food after marriage but she wasn’t able to do so as she was a die hard fan of all type of meat. Again, I am not talking about women empowerment here but why was she asked to do the same in the first place and the bigger question here is, why did she agree? What she was discussing that day – she ate chicken in her office and her MIL found a bone in her tiffin. Weird. She was hassled enough to look for an advice on a public platform from a person completely unknown to her.

Wow, thats why they say that a human’s brain is the most powerful tool of them all. My old relative comes from an older generation and this girl comes from a younger generation but the point to be noticed here is, they both had been gone through the same brain training for their entire life. That’s how the result was same.

When I started writing this story I was unsure of the ending, I still am. So, I will leave it by putting down only one thing. Even a tiger dances on two legs when its training tune plays loudly and the ring master commands with a hunter in hand.

I Love Doing Nothing..

As I introspect and think what I like doing most with my time, I always end up with one thought….nothing. Yes..my answer would be nothing. Just sitting idle in any corner where the ambience is pleasant and no one is disturbing me until I welcome the intrusion. I am one of those most lucky people who realised very early what they want to do or in my case, not to do with their life. My parents realised it too as they tried very hard to mould me into a more socially fit person for my entire time with them.

I was born and brought up in a very conservative small town of north india, being a girl was a nuisance enough, being a person completely useless without any meaningful (social) aspirations in life at all, was a cherry on the top. Although everyone around me tried to teach me one or the other thing to make my life better(without giving it a thought either I wanted it or not), the only teacher from whom I learned most was the journey of my life. I don’t know about anyone else but I have to call it a miracle how a person’s perspective about almost everything changes with growing age and different experiences of facing new things and meeting new people over the time period. Exposing yourself to a new place is also very nutritious soul food. You live a little bit more lively when your soul is well fed.

Nowadays, happiness comes to me easily because finally, I have successfully implemented my all time funda to my practical life. I do nothing, and if I do something its comes from my heart and not from my brain or from anyone else’s brain for a change.  With some practice I have become better at controlling my fears and insecurities by restricting my conscience to ponder over my past or my future. When I look around I find that these are the most troubling part of most people’s life. Most people are happy and content today but they have got great memory and when it comes to bad memories their brain works like any super computer. They are great planners as well. They plan so many things and as per one and only universal truth – ‘control is only an illusion‘. Naturally, they have no control how things turn up with time. It makes them sad when they find it difficult to achieve all of their goals in a particular time period also decided by them only.

My funda- don’t go after anything….just wait. Whatever is out there in the universe for you, will come and get you. Meanwhile do nothing and if you have to do, do what you like. Few people might find it a very lame excuse to stay lazy but it completely works for me. Now I just walk the path with my desired speed, taking as many breaks as I like (which are sometimes very long BTW) and everything else happens on its own. Truly, its not about reaching the destination but walking the path.

Here is the last thing. Stop worrying and planning and thinking and preparing. Just start WALKING..at the same time doing nothing.

Tomorrow – Fact or Illusion?

In a routine office life one works around 9 hours everyday and prepares for a better tomorrow in the office for the rest of the day.

Ramya was not any exception. Like everyday, Ramya finished her work in office and reached home with a so many task needs to be finished list banging her head like a hammer is banging a wall. Relaxing after office means brewing tea, folding clothes and deciding the menu for the dinner at the same time.

She took a long breath and approached her son’s room. She opened the door and found her son Rony, sitting comfortably in his favourite rocking chair and laughing loudly as he read a book and looked completely absorbed in it.

Ramya asked him about his day without entering the room. He just nodded cheerfully.

Ramya was about to leave the room when he looked up sharply with a thoughtful expression on his face and spoke, “Mom! you look really tired. Is everything ok?”

After divorce, Ramya saw drastic changes in her son. The most noticeable one was, that her eleven year old son suddenly became very caring. Somehow, he always knew when she was in a bad shape. Before her divorce it never happened.

Anyways, she smiled weakly,” It was long day in office. I have submitted my presentation but I am worried about tomorrow. If anything goes wrong I could loose my job” she rubbed her forehead and replied.

He nodded his head like a real mature person and spoke philosophically, “I understand completely. Last year during my football practice sessions I always felt very tensed. I always used to think what will happen tomorrow. What if I won’t be able to play well. And Mom you won’t believe… it didn’t matter how hard I tried I was never happy and confident. One day my coach Mr. Pal, he is super cool by the way, came to me. He asked me why I always look hassled. I told him about my problem. He explained few things to me and everything became brighter. Do you want to know what he said?”

Ramya nodded with an absent minded as she was still thinking about her presentation.

“He asked me one question, “Rony you are always fleeing about tomorrow but have you ever seen it?

Ramya looked lost but Rony went on anyway,”I jumped and said,Of course! Tomorrow is tomorrow.”

Then Mr. Pal asked again, “Yes.. but have you actually been in a tomorrow?”

I looked at him dumbfounded so Mr.Pal explained further,”See, its very simple. You  can talk about tomorrow by saying that you will do this, it will happen tomorrow and this will not happen tomorrow..right? But does it really work like that? Does that tomorrow ever come?”

I was still completely blank.

“Today is 10th October and tomorrow is 11th October. Can you live in 11th October today?”

“I shook my head without even knowing that I was doing so.” Rony said.

“And tell me when you will get up in the morning on 11th October what day would it be for you?” Will it be 10th October or will it be 11th October?

I thought with a long pause and said,”Obviously it will be 11th October.”

“And what will be the day to you? On 10th October, 11th October is tomorrow, but when you wake up in the morning on 11th October, for you its today only. Right.”

“He gave me few seconds to comprehend the logic…” Ramya looked at Rony sharply on his use of  nice vocabulary. Rony smiled,”Nowadays! I worry less and read more.”

“So back to the main topic, I understood after some time and relied to Mr. Pal, “Actually, you are right sir. It doesn’t matter what we think or do or do not do, there is no tomorrow for any of us. There is only today.”

“And…?” Mr. Pal asked promptly…When I didn’t answer he said as he got up..”and you are wasting the time of your life for something which is not even there. Aren’t you son?”

Before leaving Mr. Pal patted my head lovingly and said,”Doing hard work today and having fun in your life is the only doable thing. Try to follow my advice and see how everything takes a turn in your favour.”

As Rony finished his small but very effective talk to his coach he looked back at Ramya, “After that day I never thought about the result of my work. I just give my hundred percent in everything and leave it. Because of this new practice I have so much of free time now. I read, I spend time with my friends and I even sing. But thats for me only. So, the point is, if you have done your best in your presentation then leave it. Whatever will happen will happen. Don’t worry. You will see how much extra time you have at your disposal if you are not thinking about tomorrow. And Mom don’t waste any more time as you have to do everything today only as there is no tomorrow.”

Ramya just kept looking at her son as if she has lost all her senses. He was absolutely right. There was nothing she could about any of this except worrying. This was taking up all her time and nothing was going to change.

She stood up with a smile on her face and asked Rony, “Pizza for dinner?”

Rony Jumped from his chair and hugged his mother,” From today I am going to live my life like you. As we can clearly see that between the two of us, you are more sorted and joyful. Its better that I follow you and not the other way around.”

Ramya hugged him tightly, gave him a kiss and told him to come outside after 30 minutes as the pizza will arrive.

As she went to bed that night, the prayed to god,”Dear god! I want to thank you for such a wonderful life. Thank you.”

There were no demands and no questions in her prayers that night. God also slept little bit more cheerfully as his children did the same.

The Determined Tiny Leaf…

After having the same fight with his father, third time in two weeks in a row, Shaun was really frustrated. He had talent and desire to study architecture but his father was not ready to listen to anything anyone has to say on the matter. His mother and sister were trying to support him as best as they could nothing was working out in Shaun’s favor.

Shaun Jones, a nineteen year old boy, son of the wealthiest man of Parbhani, a small town with a small population. His father ran the biggest sugar mill in the area. Their family had been the most powerful and most wealthy family of the town for the past 120 years. Shaun’s great grand father started the business from the scratch and turned it into a thriving unit within few years. After that, his grandfather and his father, all had proved their steel as great and glorified businessmen, who made everything even more shiny and fruitful as the time passed by.

But Shaun was not like them. His greatest strength was not his business acumen but his excellent fingers on a paper sheet with the pen and scale.  As he was an Architect from his soul but still completely untrained for the job. He undoubtedly and undeniably wanted to be an architect.

He discussed it with his father many times but every time they ended up quarreling. What could he do more to convince his father? He had won many prestigious and well known contest in the field of architect. Every one who knew him closely was in agreement that he had great talent when it comes to design any structure. His father was another matter. As the owner of such a fruitful business empire and the protector of the history of a glorious family he was utterly closed to all other ideas related to Shaun’s career.

As Shaun came out of his father’s study after a very natural row on the same topic, he just kept striding with a fuming anger. He did not realized for a long time that he was again headed to his favorite spot in the nearby forest, which surrounded his ancestors home for more than hundred years.

After reaching to his usual tree he sat down under the soothing shadow and took few very deep and frustrated breaths. How the hell did he and his father always end up at the same point. As always his father said in his firm and authoritative voice,”I know whats best for you. We shall not have this discussion again Shaun. You may leave now as I am little busy at this moment and have no further say on the matter.”

Sitting under his tree Shaun closed his eyes and did a quick analysis of his situation. He was 19 years old. Heir of a great family and progressive business. Son to loving and caring parents, brother to the most sweet sister in the entire world, he had responsibilities towards everything and everyone. What could he do? More important, what should he do?

His father was a renowned businessman, his mother also hailed from a family in which everyone had been a proved their metals as a great business persons at one time or another. She understood everything crystal clear when it comes to business and had been a great help for Shaun’s father from the time of their marriage.

Shaun closed his eyes for few moments. When he opened his eyes, nothing could have shocked him more. He saw that a tiny leaf was hanging just above his head and was shining like a treasure in the forest. It looked like that it was made with gold. It was not a solid leaf but was made of very sheen net through which sunlight was raining on his face. He felt like a shower of gold was coming onto his face. He rose and stood towering over the leaf and he was more shocked to see that it looked totally normal from the above. What kind of weird dream was he having. He shook his head so hard that his teeth chattered and pinched his own skin but he didn’t wake up.

Because he was already awake.

Shaun checked the leaf again from the down and the golden shower was still coming down uninterrupted. He stood there for a long time, watching the tiny leaf, dumbfounded. Suddenly he heard that someone was calling his name, and whoever was calling him, knew very well how to whisper in a magical way, as it was like soothing hand against Shaun,s face. He looked in the direction of the sound and suddenly felt dizzy because of the strong pull he felt towards the sound.

Two gigantic tree trunks were standing facing each other, making everything tiny and puny under their great shadows. It was funny, how he never realized, that those trees looked like two mighty guards, who stood tall above all and were vigorous enough to protect their master from any and every danger, which may fall in his path. He hesitated. Took a step forth and took a step back. Still dazed and confused either it was his fantasy or was a reality, he started walking on the path which was laid between those two trees. He followed no direction just kept on walking. The surrounding changed around him after sometime as if the earth has shifted from its axis and north pole had became south pole all of a sudden.

Turning from a normal green forest, the place became a flower valley, which had flowers in every possible color which was existed, recognized and yet to be recognized by the human race.

Shaun blinked and blinked but it didn’t go away. Finally he decided to keep walking. There were flowers everywhere. He didn’t know why but he walked in the middle of the valley and stopped. He looked up and saw a small cloud was floating over his head. When he looked closely he found that it was a collection of light fog which was continuously changing the shape. He saw a smile, than two kind eyes watching him with curiosity and for moments it was behaving as if it was taking a pause from all the activities.

Shaun was about to speak when someone whispered in the same manner as some time earlier. Shaun concentrated more intently.”You want to know the secret of the golden leaf?” Someone asked him. Shaun focused more but couldn’t speak.

Shaun heard the whisper again,”you have got to nod in agreement young man if the answer is yes.”

Shaun nodded like a big idiot who happened to know nothing about whatever was going on around him.

“That tiny leaf is the most stubborn little thing I came across in my entire life.” Same whisper again. Shaun stood there like a big confused buffoon, who just witnessed a monkey grew three heads and laughed at him loudly.

For sometime no sound came. “Oh!! where are my manners?” Same whisper again. “Let me first introduced myself properly. I am the spirit of the forest and I take care of the forest and all the creatures, from big to tiny, who wander in it day and night.

“Do you want me get on with the story that tiny leaf now?” As if Shaun would like to do anything else at the moment, even of the forest was on fire.

So called forest spirit whispered again,”that tiny leaf grew normal and behaved normal her entire life but when the time came for her to fall she just shook her head in disagreement and simply denied to fall”.

“I tried all tactics, offered everything in return if she would just follow the normal course of life but she just wont budge. All she said she liked it so much out there, she didn’t care for anything else. That leaf is fragile and such a tiny thing that I was utterly shocked at first of her outrageous behavior but she just wont budge”.

“Every time I asked her to fall she will just look at me as if I was daft and no matter what I did I could not bend her to my commands. First I were very angry. I tried storm, heavy rains and blazing sun but nothing worked. Soon I left her to be.

Once when I was roaming around the forest when I heard her conversing with the bird with golden feathers. I went close and heard more. The way they were conversing it was easy to understand that they were very very close friends. The bird with golden feathers said to the leaf,” sister do not fret because of that old spirit. I shall turn you into gold with the touch of my feather and than you can live forever “.

“I watched them with great fascination as the bird started turning that leaf into gold. She made an amazing pattern which looks kind of a web. But the bird couldn’t finish the leaf into gold as it was night time soon”.

After that the whisper stopped and Shaun became restless because he really wanted to know the complete story and he felt deep in his heart that there was more of the story. On seeing the most eager question on Shaun’s face, the voice whispered again,” The golden bird died the next day and never got a chance to turn that leaf completely golden. So the leaf, like a true friend, has been still waiting ever since for her dear friend to reborn and recognize her as her friend so they can start their wonderful journey again.

At this Shaun’s mind went blank. What was all this about? He was still wondering quite thoroughly and openly and the whispering started again. “The Golden Bird is my companion who helps me in creating and spreading the shine across all of my forests. What I did not know about my companion and that tiny leaf was that they both were best friends from the time of the birth of that tiny leaf. The Tiny Leaf denied to fall only because of her friendship with my Golden Bird. Behind my back their friendship became more intense day by day, tiny leaf tried to came up with one or other excuse and never fell because it did not want to part ways with my Golden Bird. But in their haste they forgot that Golden Bird also had a life cycle, she had to follow. Once Bird’s life cycle was over it dies and with in few days it is born again. Now that half golden and half green leaf waiting for her best friend to come back to life again so can be together again. Even i am not able to stop that. Now that tiny leaf is half golden no normal weather change damages her, she has stopped aging as well.”

The voice exhaled deeply and continue “now you shall be wondering why you never saw that leaf ever before although you normally sat in the same place where that tiny leaf always hung. Because…. you never needed to see it before. The determination of that leaf to stay with her friend forever was one of the strongest emotion I have witnessed in many centuries”.

” You must be wondering why I am telling you all this. Because at this moment all you need, is a little push and you shall be a successfully running on the path of happiness.”

“You, my dear boy, have talent and ambition but you lack determination. If you want to follow your heart wish then you must do what must be done. Don’t be afraid my boy. Just clear all the obstacles, standing between you and your destination. And see where will it take you.”

Shaun tried to look hard at the shape from where the whisper was coming but suddenly wind got stronger and everything became blur.

Shaun looked behind him as something snapped with a thin screeching sound. He turned back so sharply that he banged his head  on tree trunk but there were no trees around him in the valley. Then he realized that he was no longer standing in a flower valley. He was even more shocked to feel the acute pain in his legs. As if he walked a great distance. But he was not far from his home. What just happened to him? But one thing was clear that he was tired to his bones.

But how was that possible? He was talking to that forest spirit for a very long time in that heaven type flower valley and was definitely NOT walking.

And suddenly he remembered about that tiny leaf. Even though his legs were getting heavy like stones with every passing second, he still ran as fast as he could to have a look at that tiny leaf again. He searched and searched but could not find it.

He took a complete round of the area but still no clue of that tiny leaf.

After few more moments he lost all his patience and dropped on the ground like a broken branch.

Shaun didn’t know how long did he sleep but when he got up it was getting dark very fast. He knew that it was late evening and if he didn’t return to the house immediately everyone will worry and he will have another scolding.

Late in the night, unable to sleep, Shaun reviewed the day’s event in his brain. That voice, whatever was that , was trying to tell him only one thing. That if determination can even change the course of life and the very course of nature then it can definitely change the decision of his father.

Next morning Shaun got up and went to his father and said,”father I have got admission in a prestigious college of architecture. I am going to join that college and follow my dream. There is nothing you can do about it. I hope you will forgive me and with time, will try to understand that this was the only thing that could make me happy .” Shaun did not wait for his father’s reaction and started turning.

“Wait up young man”. Spoke his father, “you have taken a big decision and I know I can not stop you now as you have full scholarship and all the support you need to finish this thing but you are no more welcome in my house.”

But nothing could stop Shaun that day.

After ten years, Shaun stood in front of his father again as he summoned him back home. For ten long years he was away from his home and family. But he had achieved for what he made all the sacrifices.

He was counted among the very few world famous architect, whose every design was considered as an epitome of excellence and beauty.

People felt themselves lucky to get their home designed by him. Many families got their dream house because of his services.

When he did not have had a home for ten long years.

And now he was back finally and was facing his father after ten years. His father, as usual, called him one morning summoned him to come back home.

After two days of his home coming his father finally asked him to accompany him for a walk. Some how they ended up walking towards the same place where Shaun had that amazing and unforgettable experience ten years back.

His father was very quite for a long time. Shaun got impatient and asked with a little worry in his voice,” Father what is it? You have been unnaturally quite all this time? You called me back. For two days I have been waiting to meet you But never showed up or called me to you. Now when we are finally here you haven’t spoken a word to me in like one hour. I am not feeling good about this.”

His father took a deep breath and said,” I just wanted to tell you that I now realize that how wrong I was all those years back. You left and your mother and sister never were same again. I felt sometime that they hated me to break this family. I just want you to come back son and forget about all that I said in past.”

Shaun’s  father looked at him with his usual arrogance but his eyes were really different now. They were soft and full of hope. Hope that Shaun could forgive him for everything and come back home. Shaun realized that this was as close as his father could get to apologize to him. Such a proud man his father was.

Shaun took a deep breath and said with a face as flat as was possible in those times,” Father I am glad you called me back. I also missed everyone….I also missed Mom and Sis very much. Thank you for calling me back. It feels so good to be back home.

With that, everything was forgiven and forgotten.

They started walking again and out of nowhere Shaun asked his father,” Father have you ever heard about the spirits of forests?”

First his father looked at him with a puzzled expression on his face but after a moment or two he spoke,” there were few stories, my grandmother used to tell me when I was very young…. but haven’t seen any forest spirit with my own eyes so far.”  Shaun could swore that there was mischief in his father’s eyes at the moment.

His father spoke again,” the thing is son, that we have lived here for more than a century and for our own peace of mind we have started believing that to maintain this kind of honor in one’s family, could not possibly be only any man’s doing. There must be someone who must be watching out for us. We believe it because it keeps us going. Keep on fighting and keep on growing.

With that they turned back towards the house. Shaun knew that he couldn’t find that tiny golden leaf again but he also knew that the leaf was there somewhere in the forest.

That tiny golden leaf and the mysteries whisper solved the greatest problem of his life. An incident or a dream, whatever it was, showed him the right path and that path took Shaun to his destination. Determination and dedication, are the most important things one needs when it comes to fulfill one’s dreams and heartwishes.

Shaun was a firm believer now that everyone can get whatever they really want, if they show determination. Enough determination.
